Using Concrete Dyes vs. Concrete Stains

Concrete is such a popular flooring option among businesses, warehouses, schools, hospitals, and residential spaces because of its low and easy maintenance and extreme durability.

Many people really enjoy the industrial and simplistic look of polished concrete flooring. However, if you do prefer adding a little character and individuality to your floors, a concrete dye or concrete stain can be added. This is an easy step to execute and will give your concrete slab a beautiful, luminous appearance that will leave you and your guests speechless. It’s extremely important to recognize the difference between the two because each final result is different than the other.

What Are Concrete Dyes?

Concrete dyes transmit color by penetrating concrete or other porous cementitious surfaces. Concrete dyes are nonreactive and smaller in particle size compared to concrete stains or acrylic stains which allows for easier penetration and color saturation which ultimately leaves less residue on the surface, speeding up the application process. Concrete dyes are are basically permanent when being compared to a concrete stain.

What Are Concrete Stains?

Concrete stains are a bit more complex because they are generally broken down into three different categories; film-forming, penetrating and acid stains. Film-forming stains resemble paint because it simply coats or lays over the top of the concrete surface which will give an aesthetic appearance but ultimately damages your floors over a short period of time from exposure to chemicals, traffic, weather, etc. Penetrating stains are certainly a more permanent alternative because they penetrate into the pores of the concrete which bonds the stain the the surface. Acid stains are unique simply because they do not rely on color pigments to alter the decorative appearance of concrete, whereas they react with the minerals in the concrete which generates a beautifully etched natural looking surface.

Xtreme Polishing Systems supplies a multitude of popular brand name concrete dye and concrete stain products, including Xtreme SeriesScofield Systems , Ameripolish  and Kemiko. These staining products will make your floor look expensive at an absolutely affordable cost.

What is the Coefficient of Friction?

When asking ‘What is Coefficient of Friction’ in the concrete polishing industry, understand that Coefficient of Friction (COF) tests the slip resistance for accidents on any type of floor including commercial, industrial, and residential surfaces. Slip resistance is ideal for business owners and homeowners who need to prevent slips and falls on polished surfaces. When the flooring foundation is properly installed and cleaned, the final result will provide a safe and durable surface made to withstand heavy traffic in both wet and dry conditions.

Static and Dynamic Coefficient of Friction

There are two types of Coefficient of Friction known as static and dynamic. When measuring friction from a resting position, it is called static coefficient of friction (SCOF), and the measurement of relative motion is called dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF). The measurements will discover the propensity for accidents on flooring in wet and dry conditions. The most important however, is testing the floor when in wet conditions with water or a lubricant because majority of slips and falls are on wet flooring.

Surface Testing Methods

Pendulum testers, tribometers and variable-angle ramps are some of testing methods used to test static and dynamic coefficient of friction. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) defines the pendulum tester the national standard for the slip resistance testing machines when testing dynamic and static Coefficient of Friction. The pendulum tester is also used the most worldwide as the pedestrian slip resistance test method.  The way this testing device works is it uses a piece of rubber to travel across the flooring for 124-126 mm while mounted onto a pendulum device. The BOT-3000E digital tribometer, also known as the “drag-sled meter,” is becoming a popular slip resistance tester for dynamic and static Coefficient of Friction. This test meter is also backed by ASTM. The tester crawls at a slow pace along the floor surface dragging a piece of rubber to measure the slip resistance while documenting the values for SCOF and DCOF. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) set the ranges to static and dynamic values.

The higher the value of friction the less slippery the surface will be in an industrial, commercial or residential setting. Low friction measurements present a high risk for accidents. Standard setting for ANSI  is >0.42  for dynamic friction and >.60 for static friction on polished surfaces to prevent slips and falls.

The best quality and lowest cost ‘3-n-1 Concrete Grinding, Polishing & Edging Machine’ on the market is the Concrete Genie Grinder, designed and manufactured by Xtreme Polishing Systems. The Concrete Genie is used to grind away imperfections, renovate and repair concrete flooring. It is specifically built for the professional contractor, to the highest standards and specifications on the market for grinding concrete.

Xtreme Polishing Systems understands the importance of having quality equipment and tooling to withstand all industry projects, big or small, while completely transforming your concrete floors. That is one of the many reasons why we designed a versatile and revolutionary machine like the Concrete Genie Grinder to prevent costly repairs while guaranteeing you ease of mind when working with concrete flooring. With a machine like the Concrete Genie, you’ll be granted the ability to efficiently grind and cut the concrete, open up the pores of the surface and ultimately give it an aesthetic and uniformed look.

What makes the Concrete Genie Grinder so unique in this ever-changing market? One very crucial reason is due to the machine’s unique magnetic plate system. It is designed to go ⅛ inch away from either side and the top of the machine. The morflex coupler system also gives enough flexibility to reach even the toughest spots on concrete flooring. Magnetic plates can be easily removed within seconds when they need to be replaced. Other cheaper versions of magnetic plates are available on the market but typically have more complications. Our selection of trapezoid tooling attaches directly to our magnetic plate system and are considered to be some of the tallest segments on the market. They measure 12mm x 12mm, cheaper traps will typically range from 7mm x 7mm to 10mm x 10mm. The magnetic plates are specially designed to work with virtually all brands on the market including PCDsgrinding metals and pucks and they are strong enough to run full speed.

The single phase, 220V Concrete Genie Grinder is so ideal for residential floors and even some small commercial projects. You simply plug the machine into any single phase power sources like your standard washer or dryer machine outlets, hot water heater outlet, or 30-amp breaker box. The Concrete Genie Grinder also comes with a one year, bumper to bumper warranty.

Some other distinct features of the Concrete Genie Grinder are the easy handles used for moving the machine around the jobsite. This machine also comes equipped with an electronic leveling device to determine when you’re leveled on the floor’s surface. The water tank holds 9 gallons of water, with the water control dispenser used to control the amount of water you need for the concrete. You can easily access and add more water to the machine.

Choosing the Right Concrete Tooling Manufacturer

What is Concrete?

Concrete is used in practically every form of construction in today’s industries. Concrete is a composite material of coarse aggregate that’s bonded together with a flowing cement. Concrete implements strength, density, as well as chemical and thermal resistance, AND pleases us with an essentially natural looking form. Concrete is one of the most ingenious inventions known to man and it didn’t take long before it dominated today’s ever-changing flooring industry.

When concrete is being mixed, before it’s spread on the floor, it’s churned vigorously with water. This rotating motion ensures ease when mixing the concrete and water properly. The churning action will also eliminate the formation of any air bubbles within the mix. It is necessary to remove all air bubbles as these can be later lead to fractures in the concrete. If it’s not treated in time, these fractures could develop into large cracks. Once the slab is poured and completely dry and settled, the surface is going to appear plain and dull. This is when your concrete floor becomes your canvas. Concrete polishing machines, tooling and chemicals will assist you in completely transforming those dull grey canvases into fascinating works of art!

Keeping it Clean with Residue Dust Shrouds

Usually, when we use angle grinders to cut or grind, the entire place ends up getting covered in dust, making the whole cleaning and maintenance ordeal seem like a never ending battle. Thankfully there are specialty tools and machines that help reduce dust, one in which is referred to as dust shrouds for angle grinders.

What is a Dust Shroud?

A dust shroud  is like a chamber that’s built around the abrasive, helping capture the dust particles that are being generated by construction; this being done with the assistance of a vacuum. Dust shrouds are supposed to seal around the base, however if the vacuum is turned on, it becomes suction-like which could lock the shroud, and that could be dangerous.

A dust shroud for angle grinders is ideally used by moving over the designated areas of dust that you’re aiming to collect. The process is simple, just switch it on, and move in or around the place where you want to begin. You will begin to see the concrete floor grinder cutting and the dust shroud efficiently removing the dust, leaving you with a floor that is smoothed and beautifully polished. The shroud is specifically designed so a vortex of the moving air removes almost 95% of the dust that’s being generated.

Advantages of Dust Shrouds

Contractors in the field and those whose profession uses dust shrouds for angle grinders for extraction of dust, dirt and debris get to take full advantage of the wonderful health benefits. Silicosis of the lungs can be reduced or prevented just by using a dust shroud.

Dust shrouds for angle grinders typically come in two sizes; 7″ and 4″ depending on the size of the angle grinder and are designed to work easily and efficiently, getting as close as  1/16th of an inch close to the wall, without having the need for a removable edge piece!

How To Clean Your Concrete Floors

Are you unsatisfied with the finish of your concrete floors? Are you wondering how to clean concrete floors, slabs or your countertops? Whether it be your patios, sidewalks, driveways or other floors, our professionals have the knowledge, experience and reliable products to bring your concrete floors back to life safely and naturally!

Concrete floors get dirty very easily, although they take up dirt very gradually, they need to be cleaned at regular intervals. Overtime, they collect a lot of grime from dirty, oily cars parked in driveways, heavy foot traffic, spilled grease, etc. Cleaning them periodically will help assist in their everlasting beauty and their extended life.

  1. First and foremost you must determine which tools and cleaners will be best suited for cleaning your particular type of concrete flooring. This is because different concrete needs a different cleaning procedures.
  2. Next, they prepare the area by sweeping loose debris off the floors by using a push broom and/or later dust mop (a soft cotton one). A vacuum could also be used to extract dust and debris from any driveways. A canvas cloth can be put on any plants or other ornament-like things laying around to avoid any permanent damages due to sprays.
  3. For indoors concrete such as an enclosed patio or garage, a mild cleaner is preferred. A mix of good old oxygen bleach in approximately five gallons of warm water is used. The solution is sprayed thoroughly over every section. It is required to wait for almost twenty minutes to let the bleach do its thing.
  4. The dirt that was actually beneath the layers is mopped with scrub or patio broom whilst rinsing and wringing the broom/ mop after every few minutes. The dirt is washed away with clean warm water to rinse any residue.
  5. Using concrete cleaning chemicals such as rejuvenating cleaners, stain protectors, and lithium densifiers cleans the concrete vigorously. To clean driveways of fresh motor oil spots, an old fashioned litter is spread over it and left overnight, the following morning the floors are swept off and rinsed thoroughly. A variety of commercial chemicals and solutions such as TSP and muriatic acid are used for getting rid of different types of stains.
